Ultrasound Pelvis Price, Purpose & Results [2024]
A pelvis ultrasound is a diagnostic sonography test that generates images of the pelvis region. These images help assess the changes in structures of organs within the male and female pelvis. Female pelvic organs are the uterus, abdomen, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes and ovaries. In males, it images the reproductive system and urinary system organs including testicles, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and ureter. Ultrasound Pelvis prices range from Rs 800 to Rs 1500 in India.
It helps in the proper diagnosis of abdominal pain, reproductive organ issues, infection, bleeding and other issues.

Pelvis Ultrasound Purpose
An Ultrasound pelvis scan is helpful for the evaluation of the following female and male organs.
Female Organs: Cervix, Vagina, Uterus, Ureter, and Ovaries.
Male Organs: Testicles, Seminal Vesicles, Ureters, and Prostate gland.
A doctor may recommend a pelvis ultrasound scan for the following conditions
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding: The pelvic ultrasound is useful for detection of the painful and sometimes excessive bleeding due to fibroids, polyps, infection and some contraception.
- Urinary Bladder tumours: The benign bladder tumours are not harmful and do not spread to other body parts. The malignant bladder tumours may spread to other body parts. The pelvic ultrasound diagnoses benign and malignant tumours.
- Cancer patients with abnormal bleeding of the uterus: This may be due to endometrial cancer or non-cancer condition such as menstrual bleeding in women.
- Needle biopsies: The sample collection of cells from deep inside organs with the help of a needle for laboratory testing.
- Infertility: to measure ovarian follicle size. It also helps during an IVF treatment.
- Inflammatory disease: If a male observes some inflammation in the lower abdomen or pelvis. Then, the doctor prescribes the pelvis USG test.
- Pregnancy: To rule out an ectopic pregnancy or evaluate fetal health. However, Ultrasound pregnancy is more common.
- Abdominal Pain: It is an indication of cramps during the menstrual cycle in women. A pelvis test is useful for finding the cause of Abdominal pain. For such cases, an ultrasound of the whole abdomen may be suggested.
- Difficulty during urination: Sexually transmitted diseases cause inflammation in the urinary tract passage. To detect the other causes of the inflammation during urination.
What does the Pelvic USG show?
- Palpable masses, including uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts: Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths in the uterus of women, and these appear during the pregnancy phase. The fluid-filled sacs in the ovary of the women are ovarian cysts.
- Kidney stones: The calcium and oxalate crystals growth in the kidney are known as Kidney stones.
- PCOS symptoms: The Pelvic Ultrasound is useful in the diagnosis of Polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS). Pelvic Ultrasound gives a clear status of the ovarian structure abnormalities in PCOS.
- Anatomy of the baby in pregnancy: The Pelvis USG gives an idea of changes in the body organs of the unborn baby. This test is also helpful in detecting abnormalities in the mother’s uterus.
Pelvis Ultrasound Result
The result indicates the possible abnormalities in the structure of the reproductive organs of both males and females. Usually, results are available within 1 hour of the scan. The following is the sonogram result of the transvaginal ultrasound of females.
Any structural defect in the uterus or ovaries: When a sonogram indicates the mass of an abnormal shape and size, then the doctor diagnoses the tumorous or non-cancerous cyst in the ovaries.
Reason for repetitive pregnancy failures: The Pelvis USG test also helps in concluding the reasons for the recurrent failures in pregnancy.
Sample report
The sample report of the Pelvis ultrasound is given below:
Pelvis Ultrasound Procedure
It is a painless and non-invasive process which usually lasts for less than 30 minutes.
Sonography is the working principle of the procedure. A transducer is useful and a prerequisite for Pelvic Ultrasound. This transducer radiates out ultrasound waves at a very high frequency to be heard. The ultrasound transducer is placed on the skin, and the ultrasound waves travel through the body to the inside organs. The sound waves get reflected off the organs like an echo and return towards the transducer. The transducer processes these reflected waves. These reflected waves are then transformed by a computer into an image of the organs.
Following is the stepwise procedure of the Pelvic USG:
- The patient shall remove the clothing, jewellery or other accessories that may interfere with the procedure.
- After the removal of all clothes, the patient will wear a gown.
- The patient shall lie on the back of the examination table.
- The sonographer will apply the sticky gel to the organ and will rub it gently.
- The sonographer presses the transducer against the skin and will move it around the area being examined.
- A computer screen will show the image structures.
- After the completion of the procedure, the gel will be wiped off.
- The Person can empty the bladder now.
During period
The period during the Pelvis and Transvaginal ultrasounds wouldn’t interfere with the scan result, but women have to remove their tampons. It depends on whether women feel comfortable going through the procedure during menstruation. If women are not comfortable, then they can postpone their appointment.
Preparations for pelvis USG?
Generally, it does not require any special preparation. However, you need to keep in the mind the following:
- Drink a minimum of 710 mL of water at least one to two hours prior to your appointment. Do not evacuate your full bladder until after the test. However, for a transvaginal (TVS) ultrasound, the females need to empty their bladder right before the procedure.
- No fasting is required for a pelvic ultrasound. However, fasting is compulsory only when the ultrasound is part of any surgical procedure that requires anaesthesia.
- The Doctor may request other specific preparation as per the medical condition of the patient.
- You need not shave for the scan
Types of Pelvis Ultrasound
There are three types of pelvic ultrasound:
- The rectal (transrectal) for men: This is also known as a Transrectal ultrasound scan (TRUS). Transrectal ultrasound in men is performed through the rectum. The patient lies on his side, facing away from the expert. The Doctor places a cover over the transducer and then inserts it inside the rectum.
A transrectal ultrasound has the following applications:
- Cause of infertility: Aid in diagnosing infertility in men.
- Diagnosis of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): It detects any increase in the prostate gland size in men.
- To detect any Abnormalities in digital rectal examination (DRE) and also helps guide the surgeons in the prostate biopsy.
- Detection of Increased PSA(Prostate-specific antigen) level: This test detects the raised PSA levels, which may indicate prostate cancer in males.
- The abdominal (transabdominal) for females: As the name indicates, a Transabdominal ultrasound is done through the abdomen. The Person lies on the back of the table. The technician applies gel to the transducer. The technician gently runs the transducer in a back and forth manner over the skin of the abdomen.
- TVS ultrasound or The vaginal (transvaginal/endovaginal) for women: Transvaginal ultrasound is done through the vagina. The woman lies on her back on the table. You might have your feet up in stirrups. The sonographer applies gel to the transducer and covers it with latex or plastic covering.
Risks associated with Pelvis USG test.
There are no risks associated with the Pelvis USG. The test is harmless and causes no pain to the patients.
Frequently Asked Questions
A Pelvis USG test usually takes about 10 to 30 mins. In some cases, it may take longer.
These Doppler sound waves do not cause any harm to human organs, blood or blood vessels. Ultrasound waves are beyond the human range of hearing.
The Person shall drink a minimum of 710 mL of water at least one to two hours before the appointment.
The 3D pelvic ultrasound provides an extended and detailed view of the uterus or internal organs that is not obtainable possible with 2-D imaging.
