USG KUB Test: Price, Purpose, Procedure, Results, & More
What is USG?
USG KUB is an ultrasound of the kidneys, ureter, and bladder. The test is used to examine and diagnose any abnormality in the urinary system. Doctors also recommend USG KUB as a diagnostic tool to assess the prostate gland in males. USG KUB stands for the ultrasound of the Kidney, ureter, and bladder.
Ultrasonography or ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the Kidney, ureter, and bladder. USG being a non-invasive(non-surgical) procedure, is helpful for healthcare professionals in looking for any abnormality in the nerves, tissues, and organs of the urinary system.
Understanding PVR
After urinating, there is always some urine left in the bladder. This is known as PVR, i.e. post-void residual. If PVR is more than usual, it indicates an abnormality in the ureter or bladder. Rs 600 to Rs 1620.

Purpose of USG KUB
There are the following different purposes of the USG KUB test.
The USG KUB Ultrasound test is recommended in the conditions such as:
- To look for changes in kidney size: This test identifies the shrinkage (Kidney atrophy) or expansion in the size of kidneys.
- Obstruction in the urinary tract: This creates problems in the passage of the urine. The obstruction in the urinary tract means the problem of resistance in the flow of urine during urination.
- Tumour or cyst in the Kidney: Tumors are round or oval like cellular structures that may be cancerous or non-cancerous. Cysts are fluid-filled round pouches in the kidneys.
- To find the severity of urinary tract infection: The bacteria like E Coli and Staphylococcus cause the UTIs. It relates to the inflammation or burning sensation in the urethra.
- Hydronephrosis: This medical issue indicates swelling in both kidneys.
- Symptoms of kidney injury: This may be due to the above-stated conditions or some autoimmune disorders like lupus.
- Stones in the urinary tract: It is due to the oxalate or uric acid crystals accumulation in the urinary tract(a system that functions).
- Evaluate the size of the prostate gland: This test determines the size of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is a male sexual part that produces sperms.
- Monitor the post-treatment result: This test is beneficial in tracking the status of the pelvic organs like the Kidney, ureter and bladder.
What is examined in USG KUB?
The Following things are observed in the USG KUB test.
- Shape, size and condition of the full bladder (before emptying): For this condition, you shall drink the water and not urinate even if you feel the urge to urinate.
- Shape, size and condition of the bladder (after emptying): For this condition, you shall drink the water and then urinate completely.
- Size, shape, and condition of the kidneys and ureter.
- Prostate gland: As discussed above, this test identifies tumour, stone or structural issues.
USG KUB Preparation
The test does not require much preparation. You may need to fast for a few hours before the test and drink water before the procedure to keep the bladder full. The bladder can be examined properly when the bladder is full. No fasting is required for USG KUB. Other instructions may be given depending upon your health conditions.
USG KUB Test Procedure
- The radiologist performs the test. You will be asked to lie supine with your lower abdomen exposed.
- The examiner moves the transducer to the lower abdomen. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves toward the body organs.
- You will be asked to empty the bladder to check the PVR value.
- The images of the kidneys, ureter, and bladder are obtained, and the report is generated.
- One can continue with a daily routine after the procedure.
Risks associated with USG KUB Test
There are no risks associated with USG KUB. The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and safe for pregnant women.
The dye or contrast material is not used in this test. Therefore, the risk of allergies becomes minimized.
The Link between USG KUB and USG PVR?
The Role of the Kidney is to purify the blood and remove the waste material. The waste material urine is stored in a bladder.
The residual urine in the bladder is measured using USG KUB and is also called PVR ultrasound.
USG KUB vs USG whole abdomen
The USG KUB generally scans kidneys, ureter and bladder, and the prostate. However, the Pelvis USG can detect urinary system and reproductive organs like the ovaries, fallopian tubes as well as uterus in females and the prostate gland in males.
USG KUB Result
Normal USG KUB Result
The Normal USG KUB result suggests the absence of diseases of the kidneys like kidney cysts, kidney stones and obstruction in the ureters. Therefore, you need not go for any follow-up tests.
Abnormal USG KUB
The Normal USG KUB result suggests the presence of diseases of the kidneys like kidney cysts, kidney stones and obstruction in the ureters.
