Semen Analysis Test Price, Normal Range & Procedure [2024]
Semen analysis, alternatively known as a sperm count test, determines the health and viability of the sperm. It is an essential test for Male during infertility, IVF and vasectomy. Semen Analysis test price ranges from Rs 400 to Rs 800 in India.
Semen is the male ejaculatory fluid containing sperm (along with other sugar and protein substances). A semen analysis covers three significant aspects of sperm, including
- The shape of the sperm
- Number of the sperm
- The movement of the sperm, i.e. “sperm motility.”

Purpose
For determination of Male infertility: A semen analysis determines the possibility that a male can cause a pregnancy. If a couple has difficulty conceiving, there may be some semen abnormality. In some cases, a man’s sperm defect may cause infertility. Thus, during IVF treatment, this is a standard test.
Vasectomy follow-up: A semen analysis determines whether a vasectomy was successful or not. The vasectomy procedure blocks the sperm delivering tube. These tubes deliver sperm in semen. The absence of sperm in the semen indicates the success of vasectomy.
Procedure
You need to collect a Sperm sample at a diagnostic centre. The sperm degrades when it leaves the human body and gets exposed to environmental factors such as dry air and sudden temperature changes. Semen samples should be evaluated quickly after collection, and waiting too long to return the sample can change test results. For the above reasons, men must avoid the Semen analysis test at home.
Doctors will often conduct two to three separate sperm analyses to get a good idea of sperm health. The tests should be performed at least seven days apart and over two to three months.
How to collect semen?
There are the following steps for semen collection:
- To avoid any bacterial inclusion, wash your private parts entirely with soap. And dry them with a personal towel.
- Masturbate gently without the application of any lubricant.
- Collect the entire semen drop by drop in a sterile cup.
- Cover the cup and hand it over to the expert without any delay.
Semen Analysis Test Preparation
Men should consider the followings points for Semen Analysis preparation.
- Men must avoid sex or masturbation for 2 to 5 days.
- Patients need not avoid ejaculation for more than two weeks before the test.
- Men shall avoid alcohol uptake before the test.
- Give sample immediately after collection.
No other special preparation or fasting is required for the test.
Best time to give a sample?
There is no such perfect timing for giving the sample. A man can give a sample at his convenience. But, keep in mind that you should submit it to the lab immediately.
Semen Analysis Test Result
The Understanding of semen analysis test results requires the knowledge of the following terms:
Volume: A normal sperm volume is at least 1.5 millilitres or about half a teaspoon. The semen volume of less than 1.5mL signifies blockage or inability of seminal vesicles to make enough Seminal fluid.
Sperm DNA fragmentation: It is the most common DNA defect present in the sperms. Small pieces of DNA are DNA fragments. Their presence indicates poor semen quality and low fertilisation rates.
Concentration: The no. of sperms per millilitre of semen. A less than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen indicates low sperm count.
Morphology: It is the visible shape, size and structure of the sperm. Usually, semen contains at least 4% normally shaped sperms. These parameters can be visible to experts only under a microscope.
Motility: Sperm motility is its ability to swim or travel with the help of its tail. Experts figure out the estimation of sperms moving and how well they move. Generally, 50% or more of sperm samples should be active.
pH and Chemical composition: The Normal pH range of semen is between 7.1 and 8. A low pH value indicates acidic semen. A high pH value signifies alkaline semen. An abnormal pH may affect the health and motility of your sperm.
Liquefaction time is the normal time the freshly ejaculated thick semen takes to liquefy. It should take about 20 minutes. If yours takes longer or doesn’t become liquid at all, it could mean there’s a problem.
Fructose level. The doctor will check seminal fructose if he does not find any sperm in the semen. Low levels, or absence of fructose, may signify the obstruction in the vesicle.
If your results are abnormal, your doctor may suggest different tests.
Semen Analysis Report
This section will cover all the aspects of semen analysis, including normal and abnormal test ranges.
Normal Ranges
According to WHO criteria, Sperm test ranges are as follows.
Variable | Cut off value |
Sperm volume | more than 1.5 mL |
Sperm concentration | more than 15 million/mL |
Total Sperm count | more than 39 million |
Sperm progressive motility(A+B) | more than 32% |
Sperm Morphology | more than 4% |
Sperm DNA fragmentation | less than 30% |
Non-sperm cells | less than 1 million/mL |
Sperm count by age chart
The sperm count depends upon the age of the males. Males with more than 40 years of age have low sperm count compared to sperm counts below 40 years.
N | Progressive | Non-progressive | |
Age Group | |||
20 to 30 years | 45 | 36(80.0%) | 09(20.0%) |
30 to 40 years | 95 | 79(83.2%) | 16(16.8%) |
40 to 60 years | 10 | 06(60.0%) | 04(40%) |
Sperm count | |||
0 to 14 years mill/mL | 31 | 9 | 22(75.9%) |
15 to 20 years mill/mL | 9 | 7 | 2(75.9%) |
21 to 50 years mill/mL | 30 | 25 | 5(6.9%) |
51 to 80 mill/mL | 30 | 30 | 0(17.2%) |
81 to 110 mill/mL | 16 | 16 | 0(0%) |
11 to 280 mill/mL | 34 | 34 | 0(0%) |
Total | 150 | 121(80.7%) | 29(19.3%) |
Why Abnormal results?
There may be the following factors that may give the abnormal result.
- Taking too long to return the sample: Semen samples should be evaluated quickly after collection, and waiting too long to return the sample can change test results.
- Excessive masturbation habit: This can decrease the sperm count.
- Not collecting the sample completely: The Male must collect all quantities of semen during ejaculation. If your sample misses even a fraction of the semen, it can give unreliable results.
Can a semen analysis result be inaccurate?
There are following several issues that can impact semen testing and affect the accuracy of test results:
- Improper or overcontrol of abstinence: If people are not implementing doctor’s advice and follow so much or too low abstinence. Then, wrong results may occur.
- Not collecting the sample completely: The Male must collect all quantities of semen during ejaculation. If your sample misses even a fraction of the semen, it can give unreliable results.
- Taking too long to return the sample: Semen samples should be evaluated quickly after collection, and waiting too long to return the sample can change test results.
How to read the report?
The correct method of reading and interpreting the report is to compare the individual numeric values with the standard numeric values of the parameters. However, you should consult a qualified Doctor for report interpretation and analysis.

Frequently asked questions
Semen is a discharge of a white, sticky and thick substance from a man’s penis when he feels an orgasm. The semen contains sperms that fertilise the woman’s eggs.
A semen analysis tells the overall health of a semen sample by measuring sperm count, shape(morphology) and movement (motility). A semen analysis means the overall health of a semen sample by measuring sperm count, shape(morphology) and movement (motility).
Those males who face difficulty getting their women pregnant need to undergo a semen analysis.
To increase the sperm count, the Male should eat healthy food like milk, eggs, nuts and fresh vegetables. Apart from that, men should do exercise or work out regularly.
The semen volume of at least 1.5 ml is enough for a male to cause the pregnancy to his mate.
Semen retention is avoiding ejaculation. Some males may do this for personal or religious reasons. It is abstaining from sexual activity or orgasm. This practice also includes orgasm without ejaculation.
