How is a Mammography test done?
In Mammography, a woman’s breast is scanned under an X-ray dose. In this test, a small X-ray dose is exposed to the breast. This is painless and non-invasive (that involves no cuts and incisions). The scanned images of the internal structure of the breasts give a detailed analysis of the internal structure of the breasts.

What are the Types of Mammography?
There are 5 types of Mammography.
- Film screen mammography: It has become outdated, and Digital mammography replaced it.
- Digital Mammography: This modern technology involves the enhanced absorption of x-rays. This technique provides high-quality contrast-resolution images.
- 3D Mammography: 3D Mammography (alternatively known as breast tomosynthesis) merges the various X-rays to give a detailed structure to the mammography images.
- MR Mammogram: MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a different type of medical imaging test that uses magnetic and radio waves to produce images of the body’s internal organs and tissues. While MRI can be used to evaluate breast tissue, it is not a substitute for mammography. It is typically only used in certain situations, such as when a mammogram is inconclusive or if a patient has dense breast tissue. It is also sometimes used to assess any abnormalities that are detected on a mammogram. It is generally considered a safer option for imaging breast tissue compared to mammography.
- Sono Mammography: A sono mammography, also known as breast ultrasound, is an imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the breast tissue. Unlike mammography, which uses X-rays to create images, breast ultrasound uses ultrasound waves that are safe for the body and do not expose the patient to radiation. Sono mammography is often used in conjunction with mammography to provide a more detailed picture of the breast tissue and to help identify abnormalities.

Purpose of the Mammography / Mammogram Test

1. Screening: The test can detect abnormal changes in the breast before the patient or doctor gets to know it. Women over 50 years and above are recommended to get a mammography screening yearly. Mammography Test Procedure
X-rays are used in Mammography to get an internal image of the breast. The mammography equipment emits radiation on the breast, which is recorded in a film.
Step 1- The female technician will instruct you to place your breast on a plastic platform. Another plastic plate compresses the breast. The plastic plate is held still while an x-ray is taken.
Step 2- Mammography positioning: You change position per your technician’s direction. This helps in getting images from different angles.
Step 3- You may be asked to remain still and hold your breath while taking the x-ray. The quality of the scanned picture relates to the stillness of the breast.
Is it Comfortable to have a Mammogram?
Some women find having a mammogram uncomfortable due to factors like the size of their breasts and how much they need to be pressed. Breasts get tender when you are about have your period. Hence they can get sensitive. But a skilful technologist will take care of these things.

- Requirement of follow-up tests: If the mammogram results may not satisfy the doctor, then the doctor may suggest further diagnostic tests.
