What is an ultrasound or USG?
Ultrasound is a test that uses ultrasound imaging techniques to get images from inside the body. It makes use of High-frequency sound waves to capture the image.
The process is non-invasive. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasound is safe and does not use ionizing radiation. Therefore, it finds great application in the study of the development of the fetus during pregnancy.
The ultrasound imaging helps detect changes in the shape and size of the organs, tissues and blood vessels. Ultrasound of the abdomen helps see organs such as kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, blood vessels in the abdomen and bile ducts.
The test helps doctors to diagnose the disease behind the symptoms by having a better look at the organs.
Abdomen Parts
As shown below, our abdomen can be divided into four parts (quadrants). A doctor sometimes suggests the primary area of concern for a patient by explicitly asking for an Ultrasound of the lower abdomen, upper abdomen, pelvic region, liver, etc. The below picture shows the structure of the stomach.
Ultrasound Lower Abdomen
The lower abdomen refers to the lower section and pelvic section of the abdomen. An ultrasound of the lower abdomen procedures the images of
Male
- bladder
- seminal vesicles
- prostate
Female
- Bladder
- Cervix
- Ovaries
- uterus
- fallopian tubes
Upper Abdomen
Ultrasound abdomen or upper abdomen helps to image the upper section of the abdomen. Some of the important abdomen parts to be covered are
- Liver
- Kidneys
- Gallbladder
- Bile ducts
- Pancreas
- Spleen
- Blood vessels of the abdomen

Preparation Before the Test
Generally, it would be best to keep in mind the following things before going for USG whole abdomen.
- Choose a comfortable and loose outfit.
- Do not wear any jewellery.
- Depending upon the test you might be advised to refrain from food and drinks for 8-12 hours.
- For the study of kidneys, it is advised to drink 4-6 glasses of water an hour before the ultrasound.
Other than these, a USG whole abdomen does not require any special preparation. Your healthcare provider will guide you if there is some specific need.
Precautions for USG Whole abdomen
There are not many precautions for an ultrasound except a few. But the result of an ultrasound changes in the following cases:-
- There might be trapped air that obstructs the view of organs.
- The fat tissues in the abdomen can be a hindrance for sound waves to travel.
- The intestine might obstruct the clear visual of structures to be examined.
Procedure of USG Whole abdomen
It is a non-invasive and painless procedure. Thus, it would be best to be not afraid before the test. The test happens as follows:
- Come prepared on the day of the ultrasound with all the list of precautions mentioned above.
- Your healthcare provider will ask you to lie straight on the examination table with the abdomen exposed for the test.
- The technician applies the jelly on the abdomen as it helps to prevent air gaps between the abdomen and the transducer.
- The transducer is a part of the ultrasound machine. While moving it on the abdominal surface it sends high-frequency sound waves. The sound waves hit the abdominal organs or a fetus to get a live image of it.
- After the scan is over the water-based gel is wiped off the abdomen.
There are no side effects and no special care required after the ultrasound procedure. It is perfectly fine to get back to the regular routine after the procedure.
Results of a USG Whole abdomen
After undergoing the procedure and depending upon the test, the doctor will advise you to wait for the result. Reports are usually available within an hour.
A radiologist, usually a Doctor, reviews the scan images and prepare the results. Then, the doctor will write the findings from the scan on the report. Mostly the report is handed over to the patient. The patient then approaches the consulting doctor to get the final review and discuss further medications and treatment if required.
Your doctor might further advise follow-up tests or certain examinations to understand the ultrasound report better. She may recommend waiting for a few weeks and repeating the abdominal ultrasound for any changes in specific cases.
