What is a Shoulder MRI Scan?
MRI shoulder scan diagnoses any abnormalities in bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves of the shoulder. Doctors use this test to analyse the underlying cause of shoulder pain.
It also assists your doctor in diagnosing unexplained shoulder discomfort or understanding the ailment that is producing your shoulder issues.

When is MRI Shoulder Recommended?
The shoulder joint is complex and extensive. The shoulder has three major bones: the scapula (shoulder blade), clavicle (collarbone) and humerus (upper arm bone). It is the body’s most movable joint. How Should You Prepare for an MRI Shoulder?

We recommend contacting your referring doctor and requesting a relaxant or pain medication to assist you in getting through the scan if you are claustrophobic (fear of enclosed spaces) or experience significant discomfort while lying down for more than 10 minutes. Radiology doctors will not prescribe these drugs.

Shoulder MRI Scan Procedure
- You need to remove all the metal ornaments or anything formed of metal before the procedure.
- Then your instructor may ask you to lie down straight on the MRI table.
- You will be moved automatically into an MRI machine to scan your body parts/shoulder.
- During scanning, ensure your eyes are closed as magnetic radiation may affect your eyes and shoulder positioning is very important.
- This process takes 20-30 minutes
- Once the scanning is done, you may be asked to wait for the test results.
What Does the MRI Machine Look Like?
A circular magnet encloses a big cylinder-shaped tube in a typical MRI device. You’ll be made to lie down on a table that slides into a tunnel leading to the magnet’s core.
The magnet in some MRI machines, known as short-bore systems, does not entirely encircle you. Some newer MRI machines feature a wider bore diameter, making them more comfortable for individuals with high weight or claustrophobic. The sides of “open” MRI units are open. They’re beneficial for assessing larger patients or individuals afraid of being confined. For a variety of tests, open MRI equipment can deliver high-quality images. Experience During and After the Procedure?
During
- The majority of MRI exams are painless.
- On the other hand, some patients find it difficult to remain still.
- Others may get claustrophobic feelings while in the MRI machine. The scanner can make a lot of noise.
- It’s normal for the area of your body that’s being scanned to feel heated. It’s preferable if you stay completely still while getting the images. This usually lasts only a few seconds to a few minutes. Inform your radiologist or technologist if it bothers you.
- When images are recorded, you will hear and feel loud tapping or pounding noises. When the coils generating radio waves are energized, they make these sounds.
- Earplugs or headphones will be provided to decrease the noise generated by the machine.
- You may be able to relax in between imaging sequences. You must, however, remain in the same position without moving.
- In most cases, you will be alone in the exam room. Using a two-way intercom, the technician will be able to see, hear, and speak with you at all times.
- They will give you a “squeeze-ball” to inform the technician that you require immediate assistance.
- During the MRI scan, the examiner provides earplugs or headphones that are the right size for children. Also, the examiner may play music over the headphones to pass the time.
- The MRI scanners are well-lit and air-conditioned.
- Before the images are taken, an IV injection of contrast material may be provided. You may have some discomfort and bruising due to the IV needle.
After
- A small risk of skin irritation at the IV tube insertion site.
- Some patients may experience a metallic taste in their mouth after receiving the contrast injection.
- The recovery period is unnecessary if you do not require sedation. After the test, you can resume your normal activities and eat your regular diet.
- A few people may negatively affect the contrast substance on rare occasions. Nausea, soreness and headaches at the injection site are possible side effects.
- The contrast substance causes rashes, irritated eyes, and other adverse responses in a small percentage of patients.
- Tell the technician if you have any allergic reactions. For quick assistance, a radiologist or other doctor will be accessible.
