Fibroscan Test: Price, Purpose, & Results [2024]
Fibroscan is a special ultrasound that is used to detect the stiffness of the liver. It is a non-invasive test, used to determine the health of a liver. Fibroscan test uses the ultrasound technique to look for any scar on the liver. Fibroscan test price in India starts at Rs 2000 and may go up to Rs 5000. A doctor uses a special ultrasound machine for the test.
Fibroscan test is also known as ultrasound elastography. As it examines the physical parameter of liver tissue related to elasticity. You can also check here the Fibroscan cost in Delhi.
Things you need to know about the Fibroscan test
- Patients should avoid drinking alcohol for two weeks prior.
- You can take small sips of water or clear fluid, though you should avoid drinking in large quantities.
- Consult Doctor before fibroscan if you are pregnant or have an implantable device, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator.
- The scan should take between 10 and 20 minutes to perform.
- The (Fatty liver) FAT in the liver is measured by the Controlled Attenuation Parameter or a CAP Score. The CAP score is measured in decibels per meter (dB/m) and ranges from 100 to 400 dB/m.
- Fibroscan requires no sedation of any kind
- At the time of the test, you may feel a slight vibration on the skin at the tip of the probe as it delivers ultrasound waves to the area for measuring purposes.
Purpose of the test
Fibroscan test is used by doctors to look for any disease or abnormal liver conditions. The scan is used by the doctors for diagnosis and to make a better treatment plan. Some Important findings are
- Liver stiffness
- Scarring of liver
- Degree of fibrosis
- Treatment planning

When should you get a fibroscan done
People suffering from fibrosis or the presence of a scar in the liver are usually asymptomatic. A Fibroscan test is required if you have the following symptoms of liver disease
- Fatigue
- Itching
- Weight loss
- Yellow skin
- Bleeding from nose
- Swelling in the lower limbs
- Confusion
Fibroscan test is commonly used for diagnosis of following liver conditions
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Liver cirrhosis
- Alcoholic liver disease
- Wilson’s disease
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Primary biliary cirrhosis
Procedure of Fibroscan test
The procedure is very similar to an ultrasound scan.
- Your healthcare provider will ask you to lie on your back while exposing the right part of the abdomen.
- A gel is applied to the skin of the right abdomen. A device called a transducer is moved to the area where the liver is located.
- Sound waves are delivered that travels to the liver and radiate back. The process is painless with little discomfort while using the probe.
- The radiated sound waves are displayed on the monitor.
- The entire procedure takes a few takes few minutes.
Preparation
Usually, no prior preparation is needed however, do keep in mind the following
- Wear loose clothes
- Don’t eat for 3 hours before test
- Avoid drinking alchol 2 weeks prior to the test
Side effects of the test
There is no risk linked with the ultrasound fibroscan test.
Fibroscan test Result
Fibroscan measures the extent of stiffness in the liver in terms of kPa (kilopascals). The fibroscan result may show
- Fibrosis score F0 to F1: No liver scarring or mild liver scarring
- Fibrosis score F2: Moderate liver scarring
- Fibrosis score F3: Severe liver scarring
- Fibrosis score F4: Advanced liver scarring (cirrhosis)
People always wanted to know the normal range of the Fibroscan. They can measure their results through kPa and its results range from 2.5 kPa to 75 kPa. Between 90–95% of healthy people without liver disease will have a liver scarring measurement <6.0 kPa (median is 5.3 kPa). This means the normal range for a FibroScan is between 2 to 6 kPa.
Normal Range
KPA Reading | Assessment | Fibrosis Score |
---|---|---|
0-6 Kpa | Normal | F0-F1 |
6-12 Kpa | Fibrosis | F2-F3 |
12+ Kpa | Cirrhosis | F4 |
Sample Report
Depending upon the result your doctor will suggest further treatment and management.
Benefits of liver fibroscan over the liver biopsy
- It is simple
- Easily available
- Less expensive than biopsy
- Provides a full spectrum of liver
- Shows changes under medication
