Uric Acid Test Price, Purpose, Range & Result [2025]
The uric acid test measures the quantity of Uric acid in urine or blood. It is a final waste product formed after breaking down protein-rich food (Purines). Kidneys filter it from the blood and discharge it through urine from our bodies. Uric Acid test price ranges from Rs 100 to Rs 250 in India.
It helps diagnose Gout and Arthritis (Inflammation and swelling of the joints). A kidney function test usually includes a uric acid test also.
Purines are chemicals present in foods like liver, fish, dried beans, and alcoholic drinks. Purine, after metabolism, gets converted into uric acid. More consumption of purine-rich food causes overproduction of uric acid in the body. Therefore, instead of releasing from urine, the uric acid would accumulate as uric acid crystals in your joints. This condition of inflamed joints due to the deposition of uric acid crystals is known as arthritis or gout.
Gout is a type of arthritis that causes painful inflammation in and around the joints. The uric acid test for Gout identification is beneficial. High uric acid levels may also cause kidney stones and kidney failure.

Purpose of the Uric acid test
The uric acid test is used for the following purposes
- Diagnosis of gout (A disorder which causes uric acid crystals accumulation in the joints of bones).
- To figure out the cause of repetitive kidney stones
- Monitoring of uric acid levels of people undergoing cancer treatments.
Who needs a Uric acid test?
There are the following types of people who need to go for a Uric acid test.
- Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

A patient is required to collect all urine passed in 24 hours. The health professional may give you a container to collect your urine and instructions on collecting and storing your samples.
Results of Uric acid test
A normal level indicates that the kidneys successfully remove the waste product from the blood. A high or lower than normal range can be due to different reasons.
Its results are usually available within 24 hours of sample collection.
Normal Range
The Uric acid test result description is given in the following table.
Uric Acid Level | Males | Females |
---|---|---|
Low | Below 2.5mg/dl | Below 1.5mg/dl |
Normal | From 2.5 to 7.0mg/dl | From 1.5 to 6.0mg/dl |
High | More than 7.0mg/dl | More than 6.0mg/dl |
Low Level
Low uric acid levels in the blood do not usually cause concern. However, it may indicate:
- Wilson’s disease: It is a genetic disorder that causes copper deposition in the body tissues.
- Fanconi syndrome: It is a kidney disorder involving the low reabsorption of some nutrients in the kidney.
High Level
If your results show a high uric acid level, it may indicate
- Kidney diseases or kidney stones.
- Preeclampsia (very high blood pressure in pregnant females).
- A diet that includes too many purine-rich foods
- Habit of Alcoholism
- Hypoparathyroidism (decreased production of parathyroid hormones)
- Gout or Arthritis
- Multiple myeloma or blood cancer.
- Just a side effect of cancer treatment

Frequently asked questions
The uric acid tests alone cannot diagnose gout. However, a test for monosodium urate detection in synovial fluid (joint fluid) can diagnose gout.
The health expert recommends refraining from eating red meat, organ meat, chicken, fish, and processed food.
Increased uric acid levels in the blood do not always cause gout. This condition is asymptomatic hyperuricemia and is very common.
Non-steroidal pain killers, including aspirin, may not be taken by the patients before the test as per the doctor’s advice.
