Why a Level 2 Ultrasound is done?
A Level 2 ultrasound is primarily performed to monitor the baby’s growth and ensure all vital organs are developing properly. Since it is done in the second trimester of the pregnancy, the images on the computer screen are much clearer. So, the doctor can evaluate the child’s development in a much better way. He can measure the size of the child to assess the growth.
Additionally, he can also check the functioning of the heart, sex organs, kidney, spine, brain, stomach, and bladder. As the name suggests, an anomaly scan also looks for any potential chromosomal abnormality that the child may develop after birth.
Procedure for a Level 2 Ultrasound
The procedure for the Level 2 Ultrasound is similar to other ultrasounds done during the pregnancy. Some common steps are
- A special gel is applied to the lower belly area.
- The technician, called a sonographer, uses a small device called a transducer to move across the skin. This device helps take pictures of the baby inside the womb.
- They also measure the fluid at the back of the baby’s neck, which can show if there are any issues.
- The detailed pictures show if the baby is developing normally.
This whole process takes about 20-30 minutes, and you can see the images of your baby on the screen!
Right Time for Anomaly Scan/ Level 2 Ultrasound?
The scan is done in pregnant women in the second trimester of their pregnancy. However, the most appropriate time to get the ultrasound done is at the 20th week of pregnancy.

If the mother cannot get the test done in the 20th week, she can choose any date between the 19th and 22nd week period. The ultrasound differs in the case of twins, and more than one appointment may be required.
What are the Normal Values for Level 2 Ultrasound?
As already mentioned, the Level 2 Ultrasound/ anomaly scan makes sure that the child’s development in the womb is taking place normally. Here are some of the things that the results might show in an anomaly scan:
- The shape of the baby’s head can tell whether the child has any brain defects.
- Cleft lip can also be diagnosed at this stage of the pregnancy.
- The shape of the spine is also checked at this stage to see whether it is developing properly and the skin at the back of the spine is normal.
- There are cases when the child swallows the amniotic fluid that can be seen in the stomach and any problems occurring due to that can be corrected.
- The sonographer checks the size of all the four chambers of the heart. Additionally, he examines all the major arteries and veins.
- The expert can also check the functioning of the child’s bladder and any anomalies in the passing of the urine.
Level 2 USG for twins
For moms who are expecting twins, the Level 2 ultrasound is really important because it helps doctors make sure both babies are growing as they should. Since twins are more likely to have certain health problems during pregnancy, this scan helps to closely monitor their development.
It allows doctors to check if each baby is healthy and developing properly, including their organs, size, and overall growth. This extra care is needed because carrying more than one baby can sometimes lead to more risks or complications, so the scan helps to catch any issues early.
Difference Between Level 1 and Level 2 Ultrasound
When pregnant women go for an ultrasound, they usually have two types: Level 1 and Level 2 ultrasounds.
Level 1 Ultrasound happens during the first trimester, which is the first three months of pregnancy. This ultrasound looks at basic information about the baby, like how big they are and if there are any major birth defects. However, since the baby is still growing and not fully developed at this stage, doctors can’t see as much detail.
Level 2 Ultrasound, on the other hand, is done later in the pregnancy, usually around the 20th week. This scan gives doctors a much clearer picture of the baby’s growth and development. They can check the baby’s organs and look for any issues more closely. This is why the Level 2 ultrasound is so important—it helps doctors make sure everything is okay with the baby as they grow!
