Food Intolerance Test vs Food Allergy Test
The food intolerance test is different from the food allergy test. Both of these tests measure different types of allergies. Food allergy test measures Immunoglobulin E(IgE) and shows severe symptoms while food sensitivity test measures Immunoglobulin G(IgG) and is not life-threatening.
The latter is useful in the case of food intolerance.
Food Intolerance: Causes and Symptoms
Food sensitivity is a delayed reaction by the IgG antibody which is the most abundant antibody in our body. When we eat food and have an intolerance or sensitivity to it. IgG will give delayed reaction and studies show that this gives you a feeling of fatigue, headache, and joint pain.
But before we talk about the treatment tests, let’s first know the general symptoms of Food Intolerance.
Symptoms of Food Intolerance
Symptoms of food intolerance may take longer to appear. Its symptoms may differ from person to person but there are certain basic symptoms that usually appear. These include-
- Cough
- Stomach ache
- Migraine
- Bloating
- Runny nose
- Irritable bowel
- Hives
- Headache
- Pain in joints

Food Intolerance Test Procedure
The test requires a blood sample, which is usually drawn out from the veins of the forearm. A technician may visit your home to collect the sample. You may also visit a nearby lab to get tested. However, as food sensitivity is a special test, very few labs do it. It is always better to opt for a NABL accredited lab.
Results Of The Test
It has different ranges on the basis of age. The IgG normal range for different age groups is as follows-
Here, mg/dL is the unit that stands for milligrams per decilitre.
- 0-1 years is between 231-1411 mg/dL
- 1-3 years is between 453-916 mg/dL
- 4-6 years is between 504-1464 mg/dL
- 7-9 years is between 572-1474 mg/dL
- 10-11 years: is between 698-1560 mg/dL
- 12-13 years is between 759-1549 mg/dL
- 14-15 years is between 716-1711 mg/dL
- 16-19 years is between 549-1584 mg/dL
- 19 years is between 700-1600 mg/dL
The test results can either be high or low.
High IgG level can be due to person being infected in the body or reaction from certain substances. Check a sample report below.
Low IgG level might be due to loss of protein in the body caused by the disease including diabetes.
However, these tests cannot directly find the reason behind abnormalities in the IgG level. Thus, other tests become compulsory to confirm the reason causing infection.
